What is Dialysis?
- Dialysis is basically hooking up to a machine that acts as an artificial kidney. It is a procedure that is performed routinely on persons who suffer from acute or chronic kidney or renal failure.
- The process involves removing waste substance and fluid from the blood that are normally eliminated by the kidneys. Dialysis is also helpful for people who have been exposed or ingested toxic substances to prevent kidney failure from occurring.
- There are two types of treatment for this condition: Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis is performed at a special dialysis unit and peritoneal dialysis is performed at home.
The Dialysis Unit is designed to provide enhanced dialysis treatment for patients with kidney failure. It is a multi-disciplinary facility offering the expertise of nephrologists, registered nurses, dialysis technicians & dietitians.
We offer several treatment options for patients with acute and chronic kidney failure. Hemodialysis can be provided at the hospital, in a dialysis unit that is the main part of our hospital, or at home when peritoneal dialysis is chosen as an appropriate treatment option by the patient and his/her physician.
